Scottish National Portrait Gallery
Deadline: 30 June 2017

The SNPG has a Library of over 50,000 volumes including auction and exhibition catalogues, periodicals, monographs and reference books. Set up to support the research of staff, it is also used, by appointment, by scholars, students and members of the public. It is primarily a specialist library with monographs and literature on portrait painters, portraiture, photography and photographers. The primary focus of the collection is the history of Scotland and Scottish society, with particular strengths in biographies of Scots and Scottish portraiture. The SNPG also houses a unique Reference Section, comprising over 30,000 photographs of portraits; initiated as a documentary record in the 1930s, it now has intrinsic interest as a collection itself. Open to the public by appointment, it is used extensively by staff and researchers. A small collection of archival material, comprising mainly of artist and curators’ papers, is also held.
